A 21-year-old man arrested on charges of stabbing a man is being held at the Routt County Jail for Immigration and Naturalization Services.

Damien Poot May, from Mexico, was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of stabbing a 34-year-old man twice. He was charged with first-degree assault.

Poot May appeared in court Tuesday for an advisement hearing where no bond amount was set. The Routt County Jail is holding Poot May as an illegal immigrant.

INS policy is that illegal immigrants accused of crimes stay in jail until tried, and if convicted, serve their sentences before being deported back to their country.

Poot May, who worked at Panda Garden, also had a warrant out for his arrest in Lakewood on shoplifting charges.

At Tuesday's advisement hearing, Routt County Judge James Garrecht set a status hearing for Wednesday.

The man stabbed, Normando Munoz-Nunnez, remains at Yampa Valley Medical Center but is listed in good condition. Munoz-Nunnez suffered from two wounds: one to the stomach and one to the shoulder.

Poot May allegedly stabbed Munoz-Nunnez during a fight in a parking area on Riverside Drive just before midnight Sunday.

Police said the two had been arguing earlier at a restaurant and then again on a Steamboat Springs Transit bus to Riverside Drive.

Poot May admitted to fighting with Munoz-Nunnez and owning the knife, according to the police report. Through a Spanish translator, Poot May told police the knife fell out of his pocket during the fight.

The police found blood on Poot May's pant legs and shirt, a cut on his left middle finger and a bandage on his left arm.

The police officers who arrived at Riverside Drive found Munoz-Nunnez bleeding heavily from his stomach. The man pointed to his stomach before losing consciousness and was transported to the hospital, according to a police report.
