A 34-year-old man reportedly was stabbed twice late Sunday night during a fight on Riverside Drive. One man has been arrested.
Normando Munoz-Nunnez, who reportedly was stabbed once in the stomach and once in the shoulder, is in fair condition in the intensive care unit at the Yampa Valley Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Christine McKelvie said.
Damien Poot May, a 21-year-old Steamboat Springs man, has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault with intent to cause serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon. He remains in the Routt County Jail, waiting for bail to be set.
Close to midnight Sunday, the Steamboat Springs Police Department responded to a call from 2475 Lincoln Ave. that a fight had occurred and medical attention was needed.
When police officers John McArthur and Josh Carrell arrived, they found Munoz-Nunnez bleeding heavily from a stab wound in his stomach, the police report stated. Munoz-Nunnez pointed to his stomach before losing consciousness. He was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center.
Police Detective Bob Del Valle said Munoz-Nunnez had two wounds from a sharp instrument thought to be a knife, one on his shoulder and one in his abdomen. The knife has not been recovered, Del Valle said.
Poot May admitted to fighting with Munoz-Nunnez and owning the knife, the police report stated. Through a Spanish translator, Poot May told police the knife fell from his pocket during the fight.
Earlier that night Poot May and Munoz-Nunnez were verbally fighting in a restaurant, Del Valle said. The fight calmed down and then allegedly resumed again when the men were riding a Steamboat Springs Transit bus to Riverside Drive.
The stabbing took place in a parking area on Riverside Drive, Del Valle said.
After the fight, Poot May returned to his residence at 2552 Riverside Drive and changed his bloody shirt, the report states. The man then went to 7-11 with his roommate, Freddy Israel Farias, where Poot May told Farias that he had fought with Munoz-Nunnez and stabbed him, the report states.
When Poot May returned to his house, a roommate notified the police, who then took the man into custody, Del Valle said.
The police found blood on both of Poot May's pant legs, a cut on his left middle finger, a bandaged left arm and blood on his shirt.
