After 12 weeks of league play, it is time for the players in Steamboat's adult recreational leagues to start thinking about the playoffs.
"I think everybody on my team looks forward to this time of year," basketball player Rod Wille said. "There is something exciting about the playoffs. I mean, it's not March Madness, but it's still a lot of fun."
Last year Wille's team, BMC, finished second in the regular season and then went on to win the division II adult basketball tournament title.
This year, Wille is hoping his team can repeat in the tournament. The squad earned the top seed by winning the league, but Wille said there are plenty of good teams to challenge his for the title this time around.
"We only lost one game this season," Wille said. "But this is a very competitive league. I think any of the teams could win the title. That's why it's fun to compete in the playoffs."
The five teams in the Division II basketball league are not alone.
The Division I basketball, coed volleyball and indoor soccer leagues also will open the playoffs next week.
Christina Freeman, the sports coordinator for the Parks and Recreational Services Department, said there are nine volleyball teams, 14 basketball teams and 17 indoor soccer teams that play during the winter season. Those teams provide adult recreational sports for more than 500 people in Steamboat Springs each winter.
The playoffs for both adult basketball leagues will begin Sunday evening. The indoor soccer league will open the playoffs next Tuesday, and volleyball will open the following Wednesday.
The leagues will come to a close in the next two weeks. However, it's not too early to start thinking about summer.
The city will host the organizational meetings for adult softball and soccer April 13.
Any team that intends to play this summer is required to have a representative at that meeting. League fees, rules, schedules and deadlines will be announced. The softball meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Center. The soccer meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m.
