Holy Name Preschool took another step toward revitalizing its program this week when it announced the hiring of a new director.
Elizabeth "Betsy" Taylor of Steamboat Springs, a Holy Name Catholic Church parishioner, will assume the role of director July 1, Monsignor George Schroeder said.
"She has great experience and a good reputation," Schroeder said.
Taylor holds a bachelor's degree in early childhood education and a master's in curriculum and instruction.
Betty Reed, the child-care center's previous director, left the school earlier this month.
Taylor has served as interim director and assistant director at Steamboat's Laurel Street School. She also has worked as a substitute teacher at Holy Name Preschool and a kindergarten and preschool teacher at schools in Texas and Minturn, as well as holding other education positions.
Taylor's hiring comes less than four months after Holy Name officials said the preschool would close permanently because of financial reasons. The church's subsidy of the preschool has been estimated to be about $60,000 a year.
Parents of Holy Name students quickly rallied to support the school, and a reorganization committee was formed to determine what could be done to keep it open. The reorganization committee includes Holy Name Preschool parents, teachers and parish representatives. Early childhood educators also have been involved in efforts to keep the 25-year-old child-care center open.
Schroeder said the committee is working on a balanced operating budget. Holy Name Parish will provide the preschool with rent-free space.
Another aspect of the reorganization effort is implementing a more Catholic-Christian program to attract more of Holy Name's families, Schroeder said.
"We did have, in the past, families who chose not to come here because they felt there wasn't enough of a Catholic-Christian" focus, he said.
Schroeder commended the work of former director Reed, who spent 25 years with the school. He also acknowledged longtime assistant director Judy Winter.
