Teddy bears plan shindig

One of Steamboat Springs' best-loved traditions for parents of children, the Teddy Bear Picnic, takes place today, come rain or shine.
Bud Werner Memorial Library's Teddy Bear Picnic is scheduled for 11 am. to noon today on the library lawn. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the nearby Depot Art Center.
Alison Lambart, assistant youth services coordinator, said the picnic has been taking place long enough that she can recall taking her daughter, Kim, now 22, to enjoy the fun. Area families, as well as visiting families with children, are invited to bring a picnic lunch, a favorite teddy bear and a blanket to sit on.
Lambart said the picnic is held in place of the library's regular Tuesday story-hour. In place of children's books, there will be music by The Yampa Valley Boys, an appearance by Pickles the Clown, and sets of bears' ears made from construction paper that children may wear on their heads.
Teenage volunteers will be on hand to paint teddy bear faces and wildflowers on youngsters' cheeks.
"It's usually a huge turnout," Lambart said.
