A Sterling Anniversary Award to be presented

Two of five $5,000 Sterling Anniversary Awards have been awarded by the Yampa Valley Community Foundation in recognition of its 25th anniversary. The awards are co-sponsored by the YVCF and businesses, organizations and individuals.

In March, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club received the first Sterling Anniversary Award in the field of recreation. On May 19, Routt County 4-H received the second Sterling Award in the field of education. Awards also will be given to nonprofit organizations in the areas of health and human services, arts and culture, and the environment.

The health and human services award will be presented today at the Hospice Celebration dinner to be held at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort.

Arts and culture nominations are due Oct. 15. The award will be presented during the week of Nov. 15, which is National Philanthropy and Community Foundation Week. Environment nominations are due Nov. 20. The award will be presented Dec. 15 at the YVCF's annual Holiday Luncheon.

A one-page nomination letter that includes the mission of the organization being nominated and why it's deserving of the award can be e-mailed to or sent by fax to 879-2888.

LIFT-UP will be collecting canned goods at concert

The LIFT-UP Food Bank will collect donated canned goods at the entrance of the free Bela Fleck concert to be held Tuesday evening at Howelsen Hill. Concert-goers are encouraged to donate to the food drive.

'Defensible Space Day'

Volunteer for the Trapper's Lake Sierra Club's "Defensible Space Day" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and learn how to create a fire-safety zone around your home while doing the same for homeowners in the Stagecoach area. Meet at 9 a.m. at Safeway to carpool to the work site. Call 871-8799.

Chili cooks needed for event July 31 in Steamboat

Chili cooks are needed to take part in a chili cookoff that will happen from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 31 in Gondola Square as part of the Steamboat Mountain Chili Festival. Prizes include a ski vacation to The Canyons, Utah; dinner for two at The Cabin; and round-trip airline tickets. To enter, call 871-5382.

Volunteers sought for immunization fund-raiser

Colorado was ranked last of the 50 states when it comes to immunizing children. The Visiting Nurse Association, in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of Steamboat Springs, is hosting two breakfasts for Ride the Rockies participants Wednesday and Thursday to raise money to immunize the region's uninsured children. The National Weather Service is looking for a volunteer weather observer to take and record daily weather readings in Steamboat Springs.
