Schumacher honored with CSOC scholarship
Claire Schumacher was named the recipient of Routt County's County Sheriffs of Colorado, or CSOC, Scholarship Award. Schumacher was selected by a citizens committee appointed by Routt County Sheriff John Warner. The committee chose Schumacher for the $500 scholarship based on criteria including ability, merit, character, sincerity, purpose and need. Recipients of the scholarship must plan to attend a state university, college or trade school.
This year marks the 25th year of the state Sheriffs Association scholarship program.
Optimist Club's teen
of the year is Baxter
Recent Soroco High School graduate Nicole Baxter was named the Steamboat Springs Optimist Club's teen of the year.
Baxter, who was the club's May teen of the month, was co-president of the school's National Honor Society chapter. She's served in 4-H and also was class vice president. Baxter is a member of the South Routt School District's District Accountability Committee and helped found the 11's Club to bridge the gap between schools and the community.
Baxter also is involved with El Pomar Youth in Community Service and works as assistant manager of a kennel, an office assistant and a certified water tester with the state Division of Wildlife.
Baxter plans to attend Westminster College in Salt Lake City this fall to major in nursing and minor in Spanish. Her advise to fellow students is "Never say 'I can't.'"
Baxter received a $1,000 scholarship and a commemorative plaque.
