The Northwest Colorado Lynx won its first tournament of the year, outscoring the opposition 71-11 in a Division 2 Triple Crown Tournament held in Fort Collins last weekend.
Last season, the Lynx's successful season ended with the team picking up Triple Crown's Division 2 Team of the Year.
This season, the baseball team, made up of 11-year-old players from Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Craig and Meeker, already has won one tournament and qualified for the Division 2 Triple Crown World Series to run July 27 through Aug. 1 in Steamboat.
The team practices in Craig, and coach Shane Camilletti said the 11 players get along well and play well together, despite being from four different towns.
"We made it a point that everyone stays in the same facility, and the kids just hang out together," Camilletti said. "There is no separation. It works out well."
The Lynx played five games at the Fort Collins tournament held May 29 through 31, defeating the Fort Collins Vipers, 10-2, in the finals.
Camilletti said the pitching and defense he saw from the players last weekend was more impressive than the number of runs scored.
"We only gave up 11 runs the whole tournament," he said. "Our pitching has really come around. They don't walk people. I think we walked eight or nine kids in five games. That's not a lot for that age group of kids."
Offensively, Alan Capistron and Charles Wood hit two home runs during the weekend. Dylon Camilletti added another.
"There were so many highlights," Shane Camilletti said.
The Lynx opened the season in Fort Collins in early May and went 2-1. The Northwest Colorado team returns to action this weekend when it travels to Grand Junction for a Triple Crown tournament held in conjunction with the Junior College World Series.
The members of the 2004 Northwest Colorado Ly0nx are: Capistron, Wood and Isiah Forsyth from Steamboat; Ben Williams, Ben Fulton and Graig Medvesk from Hayden; Dylon Camilletti, Louie Neil, Kulen Turner and Brentton Ivers from Craig and Trevor Matrisciano from Meeker.
