School is out, and it's time for Hayden kids to trade their loafers and books for cut-offs and fishing poles.
Hayden's annual Huck Finn Day will start promptly at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Hayden Town Park. At last year's event, Colorado Division of Wildlife officials showed about 60 children the finer art of fish handling, casting and identifying aquatic bugs.
"It's a good way to introduce fishing to kids who may have an interest but, for whatever reason, may not have the opportunity," DOW District Wildlife Manager Jim Haskins said.
The DOW will stock Dry Creek with trout and provide children with reels, poles and bait. There will be contests and prizes for boys and girls catching the first and biggest fish.
"I've got some great prizes," Hayden Recreation Coordinator Lindsay Heer said.
The event, which coincides with Colorado's free fishing weekend, helps promote fishing as a family activity, Haskins said.
The day's fun will include a Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher look-alike contest and a hot dog barbecue.
The event will wrap up around noon, though most of the kids will end up fishing at the park all summer, Haskins said.
