I want to acknowledge the hard work of Routt County Commissioner Doug Monger for his work on the RS 2477 issue.
RS 2477 is a Civil War era law turned loophole that could have dire consequences for private and public land throughout the West.
Recently, Mr. Monger chaired a statewide task force for Colorado Counties Inc. that delved deeply into the RS 2477 discussion and proposed solutions that are in the best interest of all Americans.
Last week he and the other Routt commissioners passed a resolution that calls for a reasonable, timely federal solution to the RS 2477 issue.
It is good to see that our commissioners recognize this threat to private property rights and have added a responsible voice to this debate. They also noted that Routt County is full of special public lands that could be threatened by RS 2477, most notably Mount Zirkel, Sarvis Creek and Flat Top Wilderness Areas.
Their resolution truly looks out for all the citizens of Routt County.
Thank you, Mr. Monger, Mr. Ellison and Mrs. Stahoviak for your efforts to protect private landowners and the integrity of our public lands.
