Teacher Rabon accepts interim principal offer

South Routt Elementary School teacher Kim Rabon officially has accepted an offer to become the school's interim principal for the 2004-05 school year, district officials said Monday.

Rabon, a four-year teacher in the South Routt School District, takes over for Troy Zabel, who resigned last week to become the principal at Hayden High School. District executive assistant Dina Murray said Rabon accepted the offer Friday, one day after the South Routt School Board approved a motion to offer her the position.

Though the district lost a "gold mine" when Zabel decided to head back to his hometown, South Routt School Board President Hank deGanahl and others think Rabon is a natural fit for the administrative position. She's familiar with the school district and has worked closely with Zabel, district officials said. She also has an administrator's license.

Rabon leaves her position as teacher of the Yampa school's multi-age first-second grade class. District officials said Rabon has expressed a desire to move into school administration and that she'll be encouraged to apply for the permanent principal position once a search process begins this fall.

Rabon could not be reached for comment Monday.

With an interim principal in place, the district's focus now shifts to finding a replacement for the teaching position vacated by Rabon. Murray said the district has placed advertisements for the position with several state education organizations. The district also will contact people who applied for a sixth-grade position advertised earlier this year, Murray said.
