Girls warm up in Loveland

Last weekend's Futbol Cup in Loveland provided the perfect warm up for a pair of girls soccer teams from Steamboat Springs.

Both teams will be hoping for a top finish in this weekend's Mountain Soccer Tournament, which opens Friday.

"We wanted an event to get ready for this weekend," Steamboat Fury coach Rick Garth said. "This turned out to be a pretty good warm up."

The Fury, a team made up of players 12 and younger, went 1-3 in pool play, earning the right to play in the third-place game. The Steamboat team defeated a team from Nebraska, 4-2, to place third. Steamboat had lost to the team earlier in the tournament, 2-0.

"It just shows how up and down we were at this one," Garth said. "I think we could have made a run at winning it, but most of our players had taken part in the Steamboat Soccer Academy last week and didn't have much left for the tournament."

Despite the team's physical doldrums, Garth was happy that the offense, which has struggled to find the back of the net in two tournaments this season, seemed to come to life.

The Steamboat girls team collected 13 goals in five games and played dominating soccer at times.

Players scoring for Steamboat included Kiersten Henry, Courtney Garth, Erika Walters, Morgan Bessette, Mckenzie Worden, Ashley Stamp and Kylee Swiggart.

Garth said Maria Hillenbrand and Charlotte Letson had strong defensive showings and that Courtney Garth, Emi Birch and Grace Stockdale shared the duties in goal.

Despite going 0-3 in pool play, the only other Steamboat team in the tournament, the U-14 Cyclones, also brought home a third-place trophy.

Coach Jim Dudley said he was very happy with the way his team played in the tournament.

The Cyclones defeated the Fusion from Nebraska in the third-place game by a score of 1-0.

Holly Myer scored the only Steamboat goal of the game early. Solid defensive play from Hannah Brown and Taylor Miller-Freutal helped Steamboat hold on for the win. Liza Darlington and Myer juggled duties in the goal.
