Sonia Dada in concert today

Eclectic, Chicago-based band Sonia Dada brings its diverse rock, soul and ethnic-fused sounds to the base of the Steamboat Ski Area for a free concert today.

The nine-member band makes an appearance at 5:30 p.m. on Headwall after an opening set by local singer and songwriter Carrie Elkin.

Expect a show that swings from "straightforward R&B soul" to hints of Bollywood, said Sonia Dada guitarist and principal songwriter Dan Pritzker.

Sonia Dada's latest release, "Test Pattern," samples a variety of sounds from around the world (including Indian and Middle Eastern instruments) along with more familiar sounds of roots, rock, soul and gospel. The new album was released June 22.

Sonia Dada features Pritzker along with vocals by Paris Delane, Mike Scott, Sam Hogan and Shawn Christopher; guitarist David Resnik; bassist Erik Scott; keyboards and sampling by Ron Schwartz; and Hank Gualianone on the drums.

Now in its 12th year, the Steamboat Free Summer Concert Series includes children's activities, a petting zoo, vendors selling food and drinks and a bike corral. No dogs or alcohol may be brought into the concert.

Following the Bela Fleck and the Flecktones show last month, Sonia Dada is the second of six free concerts this summer. The series also brings the South Austin Jug Band on July 30, Galactic on Aug. 12, Little Feat on Sept. 4 and Delbert McClinton on Sept. 5. All upcoming shows will be held downtown at Howelsen Hill or at Headwall at the base of the ski area.

LIFT-UP is encouraging people to bring canned food items to donate to the LIFT-UP Food Bank. Cans will be collected at the two entrances to the Sonia Dada concert.
