News in brief

Wilderness fire reported near Farwell Mountain

A person on horseback reported a wilderness fire Thursday afternoon near Farwell Mountain, about six miles east of Steamboat Lake. When it was reported, the fire was estimated to have spread to only about six trees, said Ty Upson, fireman for the North Routt Fire Protection District.

About 5 p.m. Thursday, firefighters were mobilizing to battle the blaze, but because of its remote location, they were unsure whether they would reach it until this morning.

"It's pretty far back in there and off the trail," Upson said.

Thursday night's windy weather with dry thunderstorms also increased the danger for firefighters and required them to exercise additional caution in preparing to fight the fire, Upson said.
