Chief: Police have leads in alcohol theft
Wednesday, January 28, 2004
More than $500 in hard alcohol taken from the Bear River Bar and Grill late Tuesday night was later found in a trash can at the Villas at Walton Creek.
Steamboat Springs Assistant Police Chief Art Fiebing said police have strong leads on who could have committed the crime.
At about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, a report was made that the Bear River Bar and Grill, in Gondola Square, had been burglarized. It appeared that the side doors leading from the Sheraton into the restaurant had been yanked on until they opened, Fiebing said. A chain secured the doors.
Alcohol, which was mostly liquor, was taken. Police noticed marks on the ground indicating the alcohol had been piled into a trash can and dragged away.
Following footprints and drag marks left in the snow, police were able to track the trash can to the Villas, 2150 Resort Drive.
The marks indicated that two people were involved in the crime. The alcohol was still in the trash can when police arrived at the Villas.
Evidence from the trash can is being examined, Fiebing said.
"We have some good leads," Fiebing said. "There may be a search warrant coming out."
As of late Wednesday night, the police had not arrested anyone for the crime.
