Thomas M. Dunn of Leawood, Kan., died Jan. 2, 2004, in his home, where he was surrounded by family and loved ones. He was 63.

Tom was born April 29, 1940.

He departed this world as a son, husband, father and friend. He was a strong supporter of others and believed strongly in his Catholic faith.

His numerous hobbies focused on the outdoors and included horseback riding, fly fishing, golfing, woodworking, trap shooting and skiing.

Tom's contributions to the Catholic church began when he was an altar boy at Holy Rosary Church and continued until his death through his assistance in the building of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish.

Tom helped expand Ken-A-Vision Manufacturing since 1964 by inventing, developing and manufacturing optical equipment. He supported science education through the Sister Martina Rockers Award for Science Teaching Excellence, Science City at Union Station, the National Association of Biology Teachers and the National Science Teachers Association.

His love of camaraderie, the outdoors and horses was evident through his involvement with Roundup Riders of the Rockies, the Holy Ghost Riders, the Mission Valley Hunt and Saddle and Sirloin.

Tom developed a web of enduring friendships that extend throughout the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ann Dunn; and a brother, Martin Dunn.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Karen; a son, Steven Dunn, and his wife, Michelle, of Overland Park, Kan.; two daughters, Kristin Serbousek and her husband, Chris, of Parker, and Katherine Dunn of Steamboat Springs; a sister, Patricia Kettler and her husband, Jack, of Leawood, Kan.; six grandchildren and two nephews.

He will be remembered and missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Tom's memory to Pancreatic Cancer Research in care of Dr. Robert Wolf, Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcolm Blvd., Unit 426, Houston, TX 77030.
