Suspect granted continuance

Man is charged with kidnapping, burglary and assault

A 36-year-old man charged with kidnapping, burglary and assault was granted a 30-day continuance so evidence could be examined.

Todd Phillip Griffith, who police say dragged an estranged girlfriend from Tamarack Drive to Dream Island, appeared in Routt County Court on Wednesday.

Public defender Ron Smith asked that the case be continued to Feb. 18 because a piece of evidence needed more examination. The piece of evidence was not identified.

At his last court appearance, Griffith was reassigned to Smith, an alternate public defender, because the previous attorney recently had represented his alleged victim.

Griffith remains in Routt County Jail on charges of assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, burglary and criminal mischief.

Griffith was arrested Dec. 16 when police said they found him dragging the woman outside of his trailer in the Dream Island Mobile Home Community. Griffith's bail was set at $100,000.

His 43-year-old estranged girlfriend told police Griffith had broken into her home in the 400 block of Tamarack Drive, dragged her down Fish Creek Falls Road, across Lincoln Avenue and along the bike path to Griffith's residence.

When police found her, the woman was badly injured with bruises on her shoulders, chest, arm and face. She also had frostbitten toes and complained of head pain, the police report states.

Two police officers and a Routt County sheriff's deputy said they were at Griffith's trailer when he stumbled up from the front of the trailer, dragging the woman in his left arm and holding a bottle of vodka in his right.

The woman's brothers reported a possible kidnapping to police about 6 p.m. that day, prompting officers to go to Griffith's residence.

The woman told police Griffith broke into her house, damaged property and physically abused her before dragging her away.
