Freestyle free-for-all

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Freestyle Director Erik Skinner is expecting a field packed with top skiers for this weekend's Rocky Mountain Division competition in Steamboat Springs.

"This is one of the hottest meets of the season," Skinner said. "I expect the points to be maxed out this weekend and a lot of top skiers to be in town."

Many of those top skiers will come from the ranks of the Winter Sports Club. Skinner also expects to have a strong representation from the rest of the division as well as plenty of NorAm skiers who are sitting idle until their next competition in Mont Sainte-Anne on Feb. 7 and 8.

The director hopes his skiers can carry the momentum they gained in last weekend's competition in Winter Park onto the slopes of the Steamboat Ski Area for the first home meet of the season.

"Winter Park was wonderful," Skinner said. "We took a young group of skiers, but they all skied very well."

Among the skiers turning in top showings was Bo Randolph, who placed third in a junior moguls event Jan. 3 and then fourth in an open moguls the next day.

Tyler Singer won the event, and Eric Lehman took second.

Randolph was the top J-2 skier in the event and was joined by Steamboat skiers Luke Belz in fifth, Nic DeVos in 13th, Scott Roche in 21st and Morgan Allen in 22nd. DeVos was the top J-3 skier in the event.

Steamboat's Kylie Douglas won the girls junior moguls by edging past teammate Caterina Mader for first. Jenny Rose Lee was seventh, Alyssa Roche was 13th and Camille Bucci placed 15th.

Andy Musser topped Sunday's open moguls for the boys and was followed by Justin Henceroth in second and Singer in third.

Randolph was the top J-2 skier and the top Steamboat finisher. Michael Casale was 10th, Belz was 15th and DeVos finished 28th.

The top mogul results came on top of a strong opening day on the aerial hill Jan. 2

Steamboat's Mader chalked up a third and first in the back-to-back aerial events. Her teammate Lee placed second in both events.

On the men's side Randolph placed eighth and fifth on the aerial hill. DeVos was 10th and ninth and Max Pensack placed 13th and 15th. Steamboat's Russell Ruppert also finished 18th and 15th in the two events.

This weekend's meet in Steamboat will begin Friday on the aerial hill at the Park Smalley Freestyle Complex. The moguls will take place Saturday and Sunday on Voodoo. All of the events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. each day.
