Five students from The Lowell Whiteman School were involved in a string of shoplifting incidents at local supermarkets Friday night, said Steamboat Springs Police Sgt. Nick Bosick.

The five teenagers, all 16 or 17 from homes out of state, admitted to stealing a large quantity of alcohol from City Market, Market on the Mountain and Curve Market and Deli.

They were caught when a Curve Market employee became suspicious of their behavior . The employee confronted them and asked them to open their backpacks, which contained six-packs of beer. The teens then fled, and the employee called police.

Officers apprehended four of the teens in the Curve Market parking lot; the fifth reported to the police station several hours later, Bosick said.

When officers searched their vehicle, they found the trunk full of alcohol, mostly six-packs of beer. When removed from the car, the alcohol more than filled a grocery shopping cart, Bosick said.

Curve Market employees scanned all of the beer and determined that not all of it came from their store, Bosick said. Upon questioning, the teens admitted to stealing from Market on the Mountain and City Market earlier in the evening.

In the shoplifting effort, the group allegedly had assigned roles to each person: One driver, two "spotters" looking for police and two people to go into the store.
