Educational cancer support group to meet monthly

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer can be one of the most frightening experiences a person may have. One of the key components to battling cancer is knowledge. Taking charge of personal health and educating oneself about the diagnosis can give cancer patients back some of the control that the diagnosis has taken away.

"Taking Charge," a monthly educational support group, will begin meeting monthly Feb. 18 at Yampa Valley Medical Center in Steamboat Springs. The program, sponsored by the Visiting Nurse Association, will meet at noon on one Wednesday each month for lunch and educational topics related to a cancer diagnosis. The group is for men and women with any type of cancer diagnosis as well as their family and friends. The first meeting will feature pathologist Bill Cox speaking on the first step, understanding your diagnosis through the pathology report. Future topics will include the effects of chemotherapy on the brain, radiation therapy, family dynamics and nutrition. Call Katy Thiel at 879-1632.
