Teammates battle at Monarch
Tuesday, February 3, 2004
The trio of Sam Tarrant, Kalen Caughey and Abe Maynard set the tone for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's mogul skiers at a junior freestyle meet in Monarch last weekend.
"You knew at the starting gate that the toughest competition was going to come from a teammate," Maynard said.
Maynard's third-place finish in Saturday's meet was his best result of the season. He repeated the feat Sunday on the same slope.
"They don't have snowmaking in Monarch, so it was pure powder," Maynard said. "I loved it. You got a face shot every few turns."
The only skiers to beat Maynard at the meet were his own teammates.
On Saturday Tarrant, a Lowell Whiteman student, took the top spot with a score of 20.10. Caughey followed in second place with a score of 19.92 and Maynard was third with a run of 19.39. Steamboat's Scott Roche was sixth at 18.61.
The Winter Sports Club skiers continued to dominate in Sunday's event by sweeping the top five spots in the final results.
This time, Caughey took the top spot with a score of 21.69. Tarrant was second at 20.81 and Maynard was third with a 20.02. Steamboat's Luke Kamieniecki was fourth at 17.99 and Roche was fifth
Alyssa Roche added to the list of highlights by winning the girls moguls with a score of 18.31.
The team is scheduled to travel to Telluride this weekend for another meet.
