Holiday dinner at Community Center

With hot turkey, ham, live music, gifts for children and maybe even a visit from Santa Claus , the Steamboat Springs Board of Realtors annual community dinner will ensure that nobody in Routt County goes without a festive holiday meal.

Whether it's visitors not prepared to cook a Christmas feast or residents needing some holiday cheer after work, everyone is invited to the free dinner, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Community Center.

"It's for the entire community," said Jody Scott, executive officer of the Board of Realtors, which has sponsored the dinner for more than 20 years.

About 60 area real estate brokers have volunteered to organize the event as well as cook and serve food.

"These Realtors are a hardworking group of people enjoying the opportunity to help the community," said Realtor Karen Hughes, chairwoman of the event this year.

More than 400 people typically attend the dinner, which has developed into a community effort with grocery stores and restaurants donating ham, turkeys and other food items and residents also providing food and volunteering to help with the event.

"I've been overwhelmed with calls," Hughes said. "They're all wanting to see what they can do to help. ... It's an event everyone would like to participate in."

Alpine Taxi Limo Inc. will provide free shuttle service from the U.S. Post Offices in Phippsburg, Yampa, Oak Creek and the Hayden Town Hall. The shuttle will pick residents up at 2:30 p.m. in Phippsburg, 2:45 p.m. in Yampa and 3:30 p.m. in Oak Creek and Hayden. Return shuttles will leave the Community Center at 6 p.m.

The Community Center will be decorated with garlands and trees provided by the board, and local musicians will provide entertainment. But most importantly, there will be a lot of food.

"We always have way too much food," Scott said.

Stuffed animals and toys from the U.S. Marine Corp Toys for Tots program will be given to children at the dinner.

Anybody interested in volunteering or providing food for the dinner may sign up by visiting the Steamboat Springs Board of Realtors Web site,, where there are links to sign-up sheets near the bottom of the home page.
