The Soroco boys basketball team is off to a 2-2 start after winning its past two games by an average of eight points.
The Rams opened the season with close losses to DeBeque and Plateau Valley but defeated Nucla in the final day of the DeBeque Tournament and beat Vail Christian, 57-46, on Friday to improve to .500 on the season.
Carl Remick had 16 points to lead Soroco against DeBeque. Tony Iacovetto had 20 points in the loss to Plateau Valley. Iacovetto, Ben Montoya and Denis Luark each had 10 points in the win against Nucla.
"Denis played outstanding defense in all three games," Rams coach Andy Smith said.
In a break from close games, Soroco beat Vail Christian by double digits Friday to open the home season.
"They are working really well together, which is nice," Smith said.
Iacovetto had 22 points in the win, and Smith expects the defensive pressure to pick up on Iacovetto as soon as Friday night's game against North Park.
"League teams know him and know what he does," Smith said. "I think the guys are working well enough with each other that (teams) will have a hard time double-teaming him and leaving others open. It will open up some things."
Soroco defeated North Park twice last season, so Smith is expecting the Wildcats to be ready to play Friday. North Park and Soroco are in the same league but no longer in the same classification because of dropping enrollment in Walden.
"I think the guys are ready to play some league opponents to see how they are doing," Smith said.
