League coaches like Hayden

Western Slope League coaches named seven Hayden football players to the All-League team and honorable mention team.

Seniors Evan Hilling (wide receiver) and Jesse Drennan (defensive line), juniors Keenan Bruchez (quarterback) and Tyson Sweetser (offensive line) and sophomore Brandon Ford (linebacker) were first-team All-League selections.

Seniors Seth Copeland (defensive line) and Cam Whiteman (running back) were honorable mention All-League picks.

Hayden football coach Shawn Baumgartner thinks more than seven Tigers deserved league recognition, but the league champion only gets seven league spots. The remaining spots are divided among the other seven schools.

"We have some kids that should have been on somewhere that weren't," Baumgartner said.

Hayden's league does not select offensive and defensive Players of the Year, though Hayden likely would have had the winner in one or both of those categories, too.

The Tigers, who finished 10-1, won the league title with a 7-0 record. Leading the way on offense was Bruchez, who finished with 1,971 yards passing and 25 touchdowns. He also rushed for 372 yards and four touchdowns.

Hilling finished with 34 receptions for 714 yards and eight touchdowns. Ford was second on the team in tackles with 124, including three sacks, one safety and two interceptions. Drennan, who is arguably one of the top all-around players in Class 2A, finished with 88 tackles, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. He also led Hayden with 21 touchdowns scored.

Copeland led Hayden with 128 tackles and five sacks. Whiteman was the Tigers' top rusher with 849 yards on 161 carries with 12 touchdowns.

Colorado's All-State selections will be released Thursday, and Hayden likely will have multiple players on the All-State teams.
