Sound Off for Dec. 12

Why is booze OK?
About the pot smoking going on in the gondola: It says right here in the article that, under the Skier Safety Act, it's illegal to ski under the influence of a narcotic or alcohol. Then how can Ski Corp. sell alcohol on the mountain when it's illegal to ski under the influence of alcohol? That's really hypocritical. I'm much more worried about some tourist who doesn't know how to ski coming drunk down the hill than some local who's stoned out of his mind tearing it up.
I think it's pretty lame that GRAMNET and the sheriff's department have to spend our taxpayer money going after a couple of snowboarders smoking pot. And going after medical marijuana users? Don't they have better things to do? And if it's illegal to ski under the influence of any narcotics or alcohol, then how can they sell alcohol on the mountain? I'd much rather be around a stoned skier than a drunken skier.
Clean off cop cars
I live in Oak Creek, and I'm quite concerned about the two police cars sitting downtown covered with snow. That makes it look like there are no police in town, which is an open invitation to people who might want to come down here and do something that isn't legal. Maybe they should at least clean them off so they look like they're being used.
Blinded by the sign
I think it's really sad that when you stop at the new light on Mount Werner Road, you can barely make out the Steamboat sign in front of Central Park Plaza but you get blinded by the new Gart Brothers sign. What happened to our community?
Where are priorities?
I want to sound off about the City Council. They are approving every project that comes forward to them, but then when the affordable housing authority comes forward to them, they say they don't want to and need more proof of what the authority will do with that money. We can afford a new golf clubhouse or build new tennis courts but we can't provide affordable housing for our community? That's not right.
Good job, GRAMNET
Hats off to GRAMNET for their recent drug bust in Oak Creek. Keep up the good work. Even though the mayor and some Town Board members don't think there is a problem, it is widespread and we would like a drug-free town.
Thank you, town
Boy, was I happy to read that Oak Creek is getting a treasurer and a police chief all at the same time, especially the police chief. To all the people who keep riding their snowmobiles up and down Main Street like maniacs because they think no one is going to catch them, your time has come.
Detractos are few, loud
I see by last week's Sound Off that the We Hate Oak Creek Society of two or three people is back at it. Batteries and refrigerators littering the streets? Bizarre hallucination. Town Hall and police in disarray? The streets are patrolled every day by Officer Linda and Officer Eileen and our new police chief, who graduated from POST certification first in his class, will be on duty Friday. Town Hall and the Town Board are functioning just fine, thank you, and a new treasurer has been hired after a careful search. I will give these disaffected few credit for one thing: They are vindictively persistent.
Good URA vote
I'd like to thank the City Council for its vision toward Steamboat's future for voting for the urban renewal authority. The Steamboat Springs School District and Routt County will benefit from the increased tax a revitalized base area will bring.
Distancing Fund Board
A third way to distance the Educational Fund Board from the School Board would be to use the funds for educational programs other than those conducted through the public schools. With the rich diversity of educational programs in the community, from Yampatika to Perry-Mansfield, there are ample opportunities to fund education unrelated to the public schools. If this were done, there would be no issue about the independence of the fund board from the school district. This also would benefit those members of the community who do not attend the public schools. Short of doing this, the Fund Board members are paying lip service to what they are trying to accomplish. Or is this education fund really just another way to bypass the equal education laws of the state?
