The Steamboat Chix with Stix women's hockey team nearly overcame a depleted roster to defeat the Breckenridge Blizzard on Nov. 20.
The Blizzard, one of the better teams in the Women's Association of Colorado Hockey, beat the Chix, 1-0, in a defensive showdown.
The Chix had just 10 players make the trip to Breckenridge, player Lisa Owen said, but they played well despite having two lines to the Blizzard's three lines.
"We had some good sustained pressure," Owen said. "Breck is a good team. For some reason, we play them better than we do some of the weaker teams in the league."
The loss dropped the Chix to 0-2-1 in the WACH A League and to 1-3-1 overall.
Neither team scored in the first or third periods during the Nov. 20 game. The difference was a Breckenridge goal scored with 1 minute, 44 seconds remaining in the second period.
Steamboat had eight shots on goal, and Chix goalie Carol Vittore, the only true goalie on the roster, stopped 19 of 20 Blizzard shots.
Steamboat's defense of Owen and Diane Dwire and wingers Lynne Bosley and Lee Cox, along with Vittore, helped keep the game close.
The Chix return to action at 9:30 p.m. today at Howelsen Ice Arena against the Vail Breakaways.
