Former Routt County resident Eugene "Gene" Kayser passed away July 21, 2004, at his home in Lakewood. He was 74.

Gene was born April 28, 1930, to Albert and Hulda Kayser in Toponas. He worked on the Kayser ranch with his dad until he graduated from Yampa Union High School in 1949.

For a short period of time, Gene drove trucks for Ed Farrington, after which he moved to Denver, where he worked as a truck driver and mechanic.

He later returned to Toponas to help his dad on the ranch, but his love of mechanic work prompted him to return to Denver. In Denver, Gene worked for various companies until he became a diesel mechanic for the A.G. Grocery Warehouse, where he worked for almost 20 years. Gene later operated a Phillips 66 service station.

After selling the service station Gene worked as a repairman at a truck stop off Interstate 70 and Ward Road.

Retirement didn't suit Gene, so he worked a summer job mowing grass in Arvada city parks. He continued in that work until last winter, when illness made it impossible for him to continue.

Gene is survived by his wife, Sandy; children, Nadine Roe, Gary Kayser, Diane Krieg, Brian Kayser and Kenneth, Todd, Jeff and Carrie Smith; a sister, Ramona Kirby; and 18 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joe.

Memorial services were held July 26, 2004, at Newcomer Family Funeral Home in Lakewood. Interment was in Golden Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
