Brees leads Sailors to tournament title

Senior Ryan Brees shot even par at the Bookcliff Country Club Monday helping the Steamboat Springs High School golf team pick up its first tournament win of the young season.

Brees' round of 71 led Steamboat in its third tournament of the season. He was joined by teammates Hans-Peter Bacher (72), and Kenton Gamache (80) in the victory. Steamboat finished with a team score of 223. Durango and Grand Junction tied for second at 228. Steamboat's Tucker Campbell shot an 84 and Kenyon Brenner played in his first varsity golf tournament.

"We come to every tournament thinking we are going to win," coach Steve Dodson said. "With the talent we have on this team, there's no reason we can't win every time we head out on the course."

Steamboat Springs has finished in the top three in all tournaments this season.

On Saturday, the Steamboat team finished in a tie for third at the Rifle Creek golf course in Rifle. Bacher was one of two golfers who finished the first 18 holes at 70. But he lost to Montrose's Collin Covault in a playoff at the end of the round, dropping the Steamboat golfer to second overall.

Durango won at Rifle Creek with a team score of 224. Montrose was second at 226 and Steamboat tied with Fruita for third with a round of 229.

Brees has been shooting in the 70s this season, but Dodson said he challenged the golfer to shoot more consistently in the lower 70s before Monday's event.

Brees responded by shooting his best round of the young high school season.

"Ryan really stepped it up today," Dodson said. "For this team to reach its potential I'm going to need my seniors to play the way I know they can."

The team is scheduled to play today in Grand Junction.
