Steamboat Springs Cole Worsley took fourth in the 50-meter freestyle, and the 400-meter medley relay team finished 14th to lead the contingent of Steamboat Springs swim team members that qualified and competed in last weekend's Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs.
Worsley, 13, swam the 50 freestyle, one length of the pool, in 27.67 seconds to finish fourth.
"That was around his best time of the year," his coach and mother, Patti Worsley, said. "It was exciting to see him do that well."
Worsley had qualified sixth for the finals. He also placed 21st in the 100 freestyle in 1:04.73.
Worsley teamed up with Michael Weston, Kyle Steitz and Michael Lamb to place 14th in the 400-medley relay in 5:48.64, knocking six seconds off their previous best, Patti Worsley said.
In the 400-medley relay each leg swims 100 meters of a different stroke. Steitz competed in the backstroke, Weston swam the breaststroke, Worsley swam the butterfly, and Lamb anchored with the freestyle.
Steitz, Lamb, Worsley and Luke Hottenroth teamed up to place 17th in the 400-freestyle relay in 4:58.81, knocking eight seconds off their previous best time. Both relays competed in the 13- to 14-year-old age division.
Blake Worsley, 16, and Cameron Osteen, 12, also qualified for the Junior Olympics as individuals.
Osteen placed 25th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:33.93. Blake Worsley was 44th in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.26.
Overall, Patti Worsley said, there were 55 teams that scored points at the Junior Olympics, held in conjunction with the Colorado State Games.
"There was good strong competition," she said.
A record 19 swimmers from Steamboat qualified for the Junior Olympics -- mostly in relays -- but only seven attended for various reasons, including an increased focus on peaking at this weekend's Summer Club Championships.
The Friday and Saturday meet in Grand Junction is held exclusively for swimmers who compete in summer-only clubs. The Junior Olympics was open to year-round swimmers.
The following Team Lightning swimmers have qualified and are representing Steamboat at this weekend's Summer Club Championships: Lexie Baden, 9; Molly Dierdorff, 10; Lucy Franklin, 10; Anissa Corser, 11; Emma Lichtenfels, 11; Cameron Osteen, 12; Michelle Lichtenfels, 13; Cole Worsley, 13; Brittany Long, 13; Kristy Marshall, 15; Hestia Chase, 16; and Blake Worsley, 16.
