Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs School District teachers and support staff will have to wait another week and a half for their raises to be approved by the School Board.
During a special meeting Wednesday, the School Board honored the request of Steamboat Springs Education Association official Brad Kindred to table the adoption of a new certified and support staff salary schedule until he could make a statement to the School Board.
The matter is expected to appear on the School Board's Aug. 16 study session agenda.
Superintendent Donna Howell said Kindred expressed some concerns over reports that district administrators didn't have 1 percent subtracted from the competitive market adjustment component of their salary increases. Negotiated policy stipulates that teachers and support staff will have 1 percent subtracted from their competitive market adjustment for the 2004-05 salary schedule.
Kindred could not be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
Howell and Dale Mellor, director of operations and finance for the district, said administrators did have the 1 percent deducted from their competitive market adjustments when the School Board approved administrative salary increases in June.
Typically, the district increases administrative salaries by the same percentage as teacher salaries, Howell said.
Kindred felt comfortable with the revised salary schedule after speaking with Howell, she said, but she wanted to make sure he had the opportunity to address the School Board before the increases were finalized, Howell said.
"I believe he should have the opportunity to say what his perspective is," Howell said. "I don't want the perception that we're pushing things through secretly or quickly."
Moving the item to the Aug. 16 agenda won't prevent district employees from receiving their salary increases before the start of the school year, Howell said.
The proposed salary schedule includes a 2.25 percent step increase and 0.88 percent competitive market adjustment for certified teachers and a 4 percent step increase and 1.18 percent competitive market adjustment for support staff.
