U.S. Forest Service asks people to respect closures
The U.S. Forest Service is asking people to respect seasonal road closures. Each year, repairing roads damaged by people driving on them while they are muddy and soft costs taxpayers about $1 million. Road closures also protect elk calving areas. When disturbed, cow elk may leave their calves, which could be killed by predators before their mothers return.
The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest will enforce road closures this spring. People who violate closures face fines up to $5,000 and/or six months in jail. Report people causing damage to the Routt County Sheriff's Office or the nearest Forest Service office.
