Steamboat Springs While living in North Park, Karen Deline was logging about 70 miles a day driving her children back and forth to school. Now, the kids ride their bikes to school.
Since moving to Steamboat Springs three weeks ago, Deline has filled her gas tank once.
She moved into the downtown condominium project, The Residences of Old Town, just after it was completed at the end of March. Living right in the middle of downtown Steamboat was an opportunity too good to pass up.
"We're used to living on acres, so this is very different from what we're used to," she said. "But not having to get in my car is fabulous."
Located between Seventh and Eighth streets on Yampa Street, the 24-unit remodeled building is attracting people who enjoy or are beginning to enjoy an urban lifestyle.
Since the project was put on the market in August, two units are left, assistant project superintendent Craig Hagar said. Their base price is $175,000.
Drahota Construction is completing the clean-up process, after which landscaping will be done.
The 25,000-square-foot building was part of the Harbor Hotel. It housed 60 hotel rooms, which were gutted and renovated into 24 condos. The project cost $2 million.
But now that the condominiums are complete, Drahota will not pack up its construction trailer or security fence at the corner of Seventh Street. Instead, it will move into the front portion of the Harbor Hotel on May 1 to begin the first phase of its renovation, Hagar said.
The front part of the building will remain the Harbor Hotel, but specific plans have not been made about what its renovation will entail. Results of a pending asbestos report and exploratory demolition will help find the buildings' structural weaknesses and help steer the renovation concept in one direction, Hagar said.
Some ideas have been tossed around, including implementing a parking area underneath the building and including office space on the upper floors, Hagar said.
In The Residences of Old Town building, most walls were knocked out, including load-bearing walls, and rebuilt to accommodate larger floor plans. Also, the exterior features stucco, rock, sheet metal and heavy timbers with a modern architectural appearance that is a far cry from its former 1970s decor.
The renovated exterior also includes new stairways, walkways and railings. A larger parking lot was added, as well.
Every unit in The Residences of Old Town features a fireplace or free-standing stove and Gypcrete flooring to make the rooms virtually soundproof.
