Steamboat Springs Owner Tara Nultmeier has entered the city planning process to move her Peak Fitness Center to 1103 Lincoln Avenue after 15 years in Sundance at Fish Creek shopping center.
Nultmeier, who has owned the weightlifting studio and tanning salon for nearly five years, said her lease at Sundance is up May 5 and she is planning to move into the space formerly occupied by Fiddle Fern Antiques at the corner of Eleventh and Lincoln downtown.
Peak Fitness has a lease on the new space pending city approval of the new use. Nultmeier has some sticking points to smooth out regarding parking regulations for her business type. However, she has already begun remodeling the new space. She said she has retained a local muralist to give the building's façade a new appearance.
"It's going to be a very contemporary look," Nultmeier said. "It should be quite a vision from Lincoln."
Nultmeier said she envisions a "fitness triangle" in the new neighborhood -- Robin Getter's Center for Movement Arts is across Eleventh (in the rear of the Old Pilot Office Building), offering dance, cardio fitness and karate. Steamboat Pilates and Fitness Studio is on the opposite side of Lincoln.
The new Peak Fitness location will offer fewer square feet than the current center, which remains open. However, Nultmeier said she will be able to do more with the new space.
She said she averages about 100 customers spread out over the course of a typical day with no more than a dozen in the studio at one time. She sees as many as 60 tanners in a day, she said, and a number of condominium shuttle vans deliver guests for drop-in workouts.
Peak Fitness typically sells monthly and annual memberships.
Peak Fitness will continue to provide space for visits by a physical therapist, and Nultmeier hopes the massage therapist currently operating out of her business will be able to find a nearby location.
Moving day is never easy for a weightlifting studio, but Nultmeier said the Steamboat Rugby Club has volunteered trucks and brawn to assist her.
