The Steamboat Golf Course is seeking permission to build a new golf clubhouse and pavilion and to provide additional water through a new water connection to the Steamboat II Metro Water District.
Routt County planning commissioners will make a recommendation on the proposal at a meeting tonight, and Routt County commissioners will review the proposal Oct. 14.
The proposed clubhouse would be about 2,200 square feet and would include a commercial kitchen, retail space, a pro shop counter, manager's office and two bathrooms. It would be built in the same area as the course's existing pro shop.
The kitchen would offer food for golfers, but is not meant to become a destination restaurant, according to a report from the Routt County Planning Commis-sion.
The proposed pavilion would not be enclosed and would be used for tournament postings and registrations and for other outdoor activities such as barbecues.
The nine-hole, 30-acre golf course west of Steamboat Springs is serviced by well water, with bathrooms in the pro shop and a maintenance shop connected to the city's sewer system. Connect-ing to the Steamboat II Metro District would provide potable water during golf season.
To save money, the golf course could use 2-inch water pipes that are 2 feet under the ground, Routt County Planner Jim Goossens said. Typically, the size of pipe is larger than 2 inches and the depth is 7 feet to prevent freezing, but the golf course only operates in warmer months and would not need to build to that level.
"The thing about the golf course is it's seasonal," Goossens said. "They're not proposing to operate outside of what the weather will permit."
Planning commissioners also could give the club a special use permit so it is in conformance with zoning regulations. The club began in 1965, before the Routt County Zoning Resolution was adopted.
"The point is to bring the whole site into conformance with the zoning ordinances," Goossens said.
Goossens said he does not expect much objection to the proposal, as the golf club has been operating for about 38 years. But, he said, there could be concerns voiced about golf balls that stray from the course into nearby property, such as the Christian Heritage School.
Planning commissioners also will consider a proposal to replat three lots into one five-acre parcel in Stagecoach and will conduct a work session on the Steamboat Springs Area Community Plan Update.
