Charges related to the Sept. 20 shooting death of a Wisconsin hunter could be filed at the end of October.

District Attorney Bonnie Roesink said the office is waiting for Assistant District Attorney Kerry St. James to return from vacation before filing charges. St. James is expected to return Tuesday, and Roesink said as soon as he returns, the District Attorney's Office will meet with the Routt County Sheriff's Office to determine whether charges should be filed.

Roesink also said the sheriff's office is almost finished with its follow-up investigation.

Sheriff John Warner said charges could be filed against the man who shot Gerald Holverson, 44, of South Wayne, Wis. He would not comment on what those charges could be.

Sheriff's office officials previously said they were looking at potential hunting violations and criminal charges. The suspected shooter's name has not been released.

Warner also said there was potential for additional charges to be filed against other members of the hunting party.

Holverson died in the early morning of Sept. 20 from a gunshot wound from a .54-caliber muzzleloader.

Early reports said the suspected shooter had been a lifelong friend of Holverson's and was aiming for an elk when he shot him. Holverson died on Bureau of Land Management land about a mile west of Waller Reservoir in the King Mountain area of South Routt.

Holverson was one of six people in a hunting party that had been hunting for about a week.

Three were bowhunters, including Holverson, and the other three were muzzleloaders, Warner has said.

The group had numerous hunting licenses, including licenses to kill elk and deer.

At the time of the shooting, the only piece of orange clothing Holverson was wearing was a faded orange hat. Colorado hunting law does not require bowhunters to wear any orange.

The group of hunters, who were from Wisconsin and Illinois, have since returned home, Warner said.
