It's one of the biggest days of the ski season -- even though opening day is more than a month away.
If you are in search of skis, boots or anything else important to chasing powder on the ski slopes this winter, the best place to be this weekend is the Steamboat Springs Middle School for the annual Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's Ski and Sports Swap.
"This is a great opportunity to get some good deals," said Rick DeVos, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's executive director.
The swap will begin at 8 p.m. Friday with a special early bird special. Customers can pay $5 to get a first crack at seeing and buying the new and used merchandise. The early bird sale closes at 9 p.m.
The sale will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday at the middle school; admission is free that day. The sale will run through 3 p.m.
The sale will include winter items such as skis and snowboards, as well as many other sports-related items, DeVos said.
"We will have tons of vendors from inside and outside of the area," DeVos said. "We like to look at this event as a community service."
Last year, the sale raised $15,000 to help support the Winter Sports Club. But DeVos said the benefit the sale brings to his organization is much greater than just raising funds.
"Not only does it raise money, but it's a great opportunity for our skiers to find deals on the stuff they will need this winter," he said.
DeVos was unsure how long the Ski and Sport Swap has been running in Steamboat but knows the event is something that many area residents look forward to every year.
Athletes, coaches and supporters of the Winter Sports Club will volunteer their time to work the sale, providing a good opportunity for shoppers to get advice on the latest ski and snowboard equipment.
