Crop Walk fund-raiser begins Saturday morning

The Crop Walk, a fund-raiser to benefit local and international hunger relief organizations, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Meadows parking lot.

The walk will follow the Yampa River Core Trail to the Stock Bridge Transit Center -- about 5 km. Lunch will be served by the Routt County CattleWomen, Wool Growers Association and Steamboat Wheat Producers.

Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from Crop Walk will go to the LIFT-UP Food Bank and the rest will go to international organizations. There will be a shorter walk for those with shorter legs. Call Tim at 879-1290.

CMC offering English as a second language courses

English language learners of all levels and native languages are invited to enroll in ESL classes at Colorado Mountain College. Classes are offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays in Willett Hall, Room 300. Register today through Wednesday by calling 870-4534.

Auditions are Oct. 21

for 'Messiah' performance

Solo auditions for the Dec. 14 performance of "Messiah" will be Oct. 21 at St. Paul's Episcopal Chapel at the corner of Ninth and Oak streets.

The auditions are from 5 to 7 p.m. Those who wish to audition or have questions should call Dr. Robert Ritschel at 870-4414 to arrange a time. An accompanist will be provided, though soloists may bring their own if they prefer.

Halloween party free

at Bud Werner library

Bud Werner Memorial Library's annual Halloween party is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Community Center next door to the library. Children can wear their costumes and enjoy tricky treats, creepy crafts, spooky music and ghoulish games. Admission is free. Volunteers are needed, too. Call 879-0240.

Pilot & Today seeks events to include in wall calendar

The Steamboat Pilot & Today is soliciting information on 2004 community events to include in its 2004 wall calendar. The calendar will feature full color local images taken by staff photographers. The calendar will be distributed Nov. 30 as an insert in the Steamboat Pilot & Today. The deadline for calendar submissions is 5 p.m. Friday. Academy program accepting applications

Applications are being accepted for an Academy Leadership Program, open to high school seniors and conducted by instructors from the U.S. Air Force Academy. The applications are available at high school guidance offices and must be handed in by Wednesday. The program, which is free, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Depot Art Center.

Health and Rec offering one free swim tip session

The Steamboat Springs Health and Recreation Center is offering patrons one free session of swimming tips from the swim team coaching staff. The free sessions will take place from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Mondays and Fridays in October. Swimmers must be able to swim laps continuously. Each additional session is $5 per swimmer. Registration under way

for painting class

Registration is under way for a one-stroke painting class taught by Barb Bond to be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the South Routt Community Center. The project will be a Santa wood cutout. Cost is $35. Call Colorado Northwest Community College at 736-2323 to register.
