A Colorado State Patrol trooper stopped a car at gunpoint in the Steamboat Springs Heath and Recreation Center parking lot after the driver fled and another man moved into the driver's seat and attempted to leave.
The driver who fled was never found, but Trooper Ryan Parker did arrest Michael Scott Dedrickson, 45, of Kremmling on suspicion of possession of a schedule II drug and eluding and Lisa Marie Strahl, 21, of Kremmling on suspicion of possession of a schedule II drug.
Parker noticed a 1989 Ford Sudan weaving on U.S. Highway 40 near Trafalgar Drive about 9 p.m. Thursday. After pursuing the car for half a mile, the driver pulled to the shoulder of the road, Parker said.
As Parker got out of his car and was about halfway to the vehicle, the car was driven off. Parker returned to his car and pursued the vehicle, which eventually pulled into the recreation center's parking lot in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue, he said.
As soon as the car pulled into the parking lot, the driver got out of the car and ran down Lincoln Avenue.
Dedrickson, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, then slid over to the driver's side and attempted to drive away in the relatively crowded parking lot. By this time, Parker said he already was out of his patrol car and was pursuing the car on foot with his gun drawn, demanding that the new driver stop.
Dedrickson drove about 30 yards, attempting to get out of the parking lot, and stopped when Parker approached with his gun drawn, Parker said. The trooper said when questioned, Dedrickson said he "needed to get out of there."
Dedrickson, who owns the car, consented to a search of the vehicle. Parker said a substance that was field-tested as methamphetamine was found, as was drug paraphernalia.
Strahl, who was seated in the back of the car, was arrested for possession of a schedule II substance, which was field-tested as meth. This is the second time in less than two months that Strahl has been arrested on suspicion of possession of meth.
On Sept. 7, the state patrol arrested Strahl on suspicion of possession of a schedule II substance, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
She was involved in an incident in which a driver had an accident on the side of Colorado Highway 131, was able to push the car back on the road and failed to remain at the scene.
Parker said the Steamboat Police Department, the Grand Routt and Moffat Narcotics Enforcement Team and state patrol are investigating the case and looking for the initial driver who fled the scene.
