Sailors tennis team grabs regional title

The Steamboat Springs boys tennis team clinched its sixth-straight regional championship on the first day of action at the 2003 regional tournament Friday in Delta.

The Sailors' No. 2 and No. 3 singles players, along with three of the four doubles teams, qualified for the state tournament beginning Oct. 9 in Pueblo.

Patrick Ayres and Taylor Reed qualified in No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

The doubles teams of Danny Weiss and Jon Reese (No.2), Jesse Speare-Schaller and Brandon Shenfield (No.3) and Brian Behrman and Dylan Roberts (No. 4) will join their teammates in Pueblo next weekend.

Jonathan Solomon, Steamboat's No. 1 singles player, and the No. 1 doubles team of Alex Griffing and Nick Ludolph are in the running to make state and will play today.

Because of the possibility of rain today, match organizers opted to get in as many matches as possible Friday but could not fit all the matches in on the outdoor courts in Delta.

Steamboat tennis coach John Aragon said every player and team played well the first day, which is exactly what he wanted from his relatively young squad.

Should Solomon and Griffing/Ludolph qualify for the state tournament, it will mark the third consecutive year the Sailors have sent their entire squad to the state tournament.
