Football rivals face off tonight

Rumor has it that the Hiway Bar flag football team will have significant fan representation when it takes the field tonight against Johnny B. Good's.

"Maybe so," Hiway Bar member Todd Camilletti said with a laugh.

There are eight teams in the Steamboat Parks and Recreation's 2003 Adult Flag Football League, but not all are from Steamboat.

The Hiway Bar is comprised mostly of men from Hayden and Craig who grew up playing high school football for the Hayden Tigers, Moffat County Bulldogs or even the Palisade Bulldogs.

The members of Johnny B.'s represent the Steamboat diner.

Paul Compton of Johnny B.'s referred to his team as "the old guys" because a core group of players have been together for more than 13 years. He called the Hiway Bar men "young and quick."

It was Johnny B.'s that won the 2002 championship, however, shutting out the Hiway Bar.

"They are really gunning for us," Compton said.

Compton and Camilletti work together at The Industrial Company in Steamboat, and Compton said it's been a friendly rivalry, and the games are often close.

Last season, the Hiway Bar did not have all its players for the championship, but Camilletti said the full roster should be ready to play tonight.

The two teams play at 6:15 p.m. at the Ski Town Fields, near the Tennis Center in the east side of Steamboat Springs.
