Go-Fer suspect arrested

A 38-year-old Steamboat Springs woman suspected of stealing more than $7,000 from Go-Fer Foods is in custody in Minnesota.

Officers from the Saint Louis County Sheriff's Office found Denise Deann Humphrey in a Virginia, Minn., hotel room Friday with $4,000 in her possession, Steamboat Springs Director of Public Safety Services J.D. Hays said.

Humphrey remains in custody at the Saint Louis County Jail in Duluth, Minn., and awaits extradition to Routt County. The Routt County Sheriff's Office said arrangements to transport her back to Routt County were being made. It could take one to two weeks to get her transferred.

Humphrey is being held on $10,000 bond.

On Wednesday, the Steamboat Springs Police Department issued a warrant for Humphrey's arrest. She had been missing since $7,232.81 was reported stolen from the convenience store at 644 Lincoln Ave.

Humphrey, an employee of Go-Fer Foods, is the primary suspect in the theft.

Go-Fer Foods Manager Kim Murrah told police Humphrey was working Nov. 15, the day the money was stolen.

Murrah said $4,215.81 in total receipts was taken, $2,420 was taken from the ATM, $400 was missing from the cash draw, $197 was taken from the store safe and $70 was taken from the liquor store register.

The money was reported missing in the morning of Nov. 16 when Murrah arrived to work.

According to the warrant filed at the Routt County Courthouse, Murrah said Humphrey's job on Nov. 15 was to deposit the previous day's receipts in the bank. The bank said the deposit was never made.

Just two sets of keys to the ATM and store safe existed. Only Murrah, store owner Dan Bonner and Humphrey had access to the keys the day the money was taken, the warrant states.

Murrah told police Humphrey was the only person who had access to the cash draw between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Nov. 15.

The theft is considered a Class 4 felony.
