Ida Mae Wommer, 1916-2003

Ida Mae Wommer passed away Nov. 7, 2003, in Cortez. She was 87.

Ida Mae was born to Daniel and Mary Macfarlane on July 3, 1916, in Fort Collins. A spunky redhead, she was a tomboy and loved the outdoors, especially fishing.

A home-economics scholarship allowed Ida Mae to attend Colorado State University. She taught school in Bayfield and Hotchkiss before marrying Harry Wommer on Dec. 22, 1939, in Denver.

Harry and Ida Mae were cattle ranchers. They also bred and trained quarter horses and racehorses in Bayfield before buying a ranch in the lower Elk River Valley near Steamboat Springs.

Harry preceded Ida Mae in death on April 27, 1984.

Ida Mae is survived by a sister, Ruth Barlow of Lewisville; two daughters, Patricia Werner of Littleton and Linda Peterson of Dolores; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Faith Bible Church in Cortez on Nov. 12, 2003. A memorial service was held at Euzoa Bible Church in Steamboat on Nov. 15, 2003.
