Karen Tait: Sorry, coach Drake

With regret, I belatedly read the stories and controversy surrounding coach Mark Drake.

I am appalled and saddened. After reading the letters of support from athletic acquaintances for coach Drake, I am compelled to educate the community that Drake has positively affected the lives of young people and adults outside of the athletic arena. Last April, Drake and his incredible wife accompanied a group of predominantly choir and drama students on a trip to Broadway in New York City.

Yes, it seemed an unlikely combination. This unlikely grouping became the most incredible bond of people, young and old, that my daughter and I have ever been so fortunate to be a part of. The greatest friendship formed was between these non-athletic kids and the coach. That was one of the most beautiful things I've seen in all my years.

I apologize to Drake and his family for being unaware of this controversy. I would have helped rally additional support at the School Board meeting than what appeared only as a few loyal supporters.

Coach, I am grateful for the impact you have had on the life of my daughter, now a first-year college theater major. Thank you for being there for her and showing her that someone of such high stature in the athletic community supports students in the arts too.
