Craig resident Earl Van Tassel died Nov. 5, 2003. He was 85.
Earl was born April 18, 1918, in Craig to Earl H. and Eleanor Van Tassel. He attended first grade at the Antelope school before attending the Breeze Basin school. He graduated from Craig High School in 1937.
Earl married Florence E. Prather on Jan. 18, 1943, in Craig. The couple had five children, one of whom died at birth.
Earl was a rancher all his life, and he also worked many years as a bus driver for the Moffat County School District. He was very active in the community, serving more than 40 years as a member of the Craig Rural Fire Protection District board. He also was an active 4-H leader and was a mainstay at the county fair and the 4-H livestock sale. He also was on the First Colorado Conservation Board, a member of the Moffat County Cattlemen's Association, the Colorado Cattlemen's Association, Young Farmers, the Elks, the Sheriff's Posse and the 4-H Foundation.
Earl also helped at rodeos and the local sale barn for many years. He loved animals, his friends and neighbors, and especially his family and ranch work, which he was actively pursuing at the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter; and two brothers, Donald and Gilbert.
Earl is survived by his wife, Florence; four children, Vivian Murray, Gary Van Tassel and Gaye Schnackenberg, all of Craig, and Verla Rossi of Mack; eight grandchildren, Debbie Coakley, Kaby Turner, Bryn and Tory Van Tassel, Levi and Chelsey Schnackenberg and Jennifer and Tony Rossi; and two great-grandchildren, Justin and Jessica Coakley.
A memorial service was held Nov. 10, 2003, at the First Christian Church in Craig.
