The Steamboat Springs High School ski season is under way, but official practices for the remaining winter sports in Routt County begin Thursday.
Though football season is still going strong in Steamboat, attention shifts to basketball, wrestling, hockey and Alpine and Nordic skiing for those athletes in Steamboat, Hayden and Soroco not involved in postseason football.
Wrestlers from all three towns will meet after school in their respective weight rooms. Basketball teams in Soroco and Steamboat will meet after school, as well.
The Sailor girls in grades 10 through 12 are scheduled to practice from 4 to 6 p.m. Freshmen will practice from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school.
The Steamboat boys basketball team will practice Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
The Hayden boys basketball team is scheduled to practice after school until 5:30 p.m. The Tigers girls will take the gym floor for their first practice of the season at 5:30 p.m.
The Sailors hockey team is set to begin its second varsity season with a 9 to 10:30 p.m. practice on Nov. 17 at Howelsen Ice Arena.
Steamboat's Nordic and Alpine teams already have begun the season.
Athletes who do not have a current physical on file at their high schools or proof of insurance will need to make sure both are taken care of before they can begin practicing. Physicals and paperwork turned in before the fall sports season carry over into the winter and spring seasons.
