The Steamboat Chix with Stix picked up its first win of the season, defeating the visiting Denver Bandits on Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena.
One weekend after giving up 14 goals to the University of Colorado club team, the Chix defense and goal tending tightened down against the Bandits, as Steamboat went on to win 2-1 Saturday. The teams tied at 1-1 Sunday.
Neither team scored in the opening period of the Chix and Bandits game Saturday. Denver found the back of the net first with 2 minutes, 18 seconds left in the second period, but Cathy Wiedemer -- off an assist from Diane Dwire -- evened things up for Steamboat one minute later.
The Chix pulled ahead for good with 2:50 left in the third on Val Dietrich's goal off assists from Sue Heineke and Sheila Henderson.
Goalie Carol Vittore stopped 17 of 18 shots she faced between the pipes.
In Steamboat and Denver's Sunday morning match-up, the teams skated to a 1-1 tie. Steamboat goalie KC Amon stopped eight of nine shots she faced, while Denver's goalie turned away 15 of 16 shots on goal.
Denver scored first again on Sunday with 2:30 left in the first. The scored remained 1-0 through the rest of the first, second and most of the third periods until Wiedemer netted her second goal of the weekend.
At the 2:19 mark, Dwire and Lee Cox found Wiedemer for the game-tying score.
Both teams had two shots in overtime, but neither scored.
Wiedemer said the Chix's decision to play against mostly men in the local "B" league has proven to be a wise move for the women.
"We're putting plays together, taking lots of shots, and our confidence is high," Wiedemer said. "We wanted to get a win for our head coach, Tim Shorland. He is the best. He's always positive, very encouraging and supports us 100 percent. His dedication to the Chix is absolutely incredible."
Through four games, the Chix are 1-2-1 on the season.
Next up for Steamboat is a Nov. 22 game against the Left Hand Brewsers in Denver. The Chix also will play the Arapahoe Chill on Nov. 23 in Denver.
