Steamboat Springs will host Sterling in the opening round of the Class 3A state football playoffs, and if the Sailors win, they could host a second-round game, as well.
The Colorado High School Activities Association released official pairings Monday.
Game time between Steamboat and Sterling is 1 p.m. Saturday at Gardner Field.
The Sailors (9-1) are the No. 2 seed from the Western Slope League. The Tigers (5-5) are the No. 3 seed from the Tri-Valley League.
By finishing as one of the top two teams in its league, Steamboat earned the right to host an opening-round playoff game, and Tuesday district employees were busy clearing Gardner Field to allow the Sailors to prepare for Saturday's contest.
Tickets for Steamboat's playoff game can be purchased at the gate, but fans can purchase tickets in advance through the high school office.
Today and Thursday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., people can buy a $5 student ticket or a $7 adult ticket. Children younger than 4 get in free.
People also are reminded that activity passes are not permitted for entrance into this game because it is a state playoff match-up.
Also on Tuesday, state officials held a coin flip to determine the host of a possible future game between Steamboat and D'Evelyn, and Steamboat won.
Under state guidelines, if a team hosts an opening-round game, it doesn't get to host the second-round game. However, if Steamboat and D'Evelyn (10-0) advance, each will have hosted an opening-round game, so a coin flip administered by CHSAA determines the second-round host team.
But if Steamboat wins, and Alamosa (8-2) upends D'Evelyn on Saturday, Steamboat will have to travel to Alamosa because Alamosa did not host an opening-round game.
