Man walks into YVRA with handgun

A 20-year-old man walked into Yampa Valley Regional Airport on Monday afternoon unknowingly carrying a handgun in his knapsack, Hayden Police Chief Jody Lenahan said.

Clay Bebee of Fort Worth, Texas, drove to Colorado with his father last week for a hunting trip in the mountains north of Craig. After the two hunted for the weekend, Clay had to fly home early to be in class Tuesday at Texas Christian University.

"When we packed out, I was going to drop a lot of things off in my dad's truck, but I forgot one thing," Bebee said.

Bebee walked into the airport, and before checking his bag, he decided to change clothes. Reaching into his knapsack, he discovered a Colt .357 revolver.

"I started thinking, 'What am I going to do?'" Bebee recalled. "I decided the best thing to do was leave the bag and talk to a security guard, pull him aside and talk one on one."

Bebee said airport security was very understanding. After a failed attempt to call his father, he decided to leave the gun with the Hayden Police Department, which later contacted his father, Bebee said.

"I'm glad I caught it before I got to the baggage check," Bebee said. "If I didn't, I think I'd be in jail now."
