Former Steamboat Springs resident Edwin Root died May 10, 2003, at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. He was 78.
Edwin was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Longmont to Howard and Ellen Root.
He graduated from Longmont High School in 1943. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder before he graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science.
Edwin served in the 3rd European Civil Affairs Regiment in Europe during World War II.
He owned and operated Edwin Root Insurance Agency in Steamboat from 1954 to 1965. He later owned and operated Root Mortuary in Steamboat from 1965 to 1990, during which time he also served as Routt County coroner.
After retiring, Edwin became an avid golfer, ballroom dancer and active member of the Elks Lodge in Longmont.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his former wife, Mary Deane Root.
Edwin is survived by a sister, Lois MacFarlane of Steamboat; a daughter, Virginia Ann Monroe of Colorado Springs; three sons, Dr. William Deane "Buck" Root of Douglas, Wyo., Henry Taylor Root of Wray, and Douglas Howard Root of Mountain Home, Idaho; an adopted daughter, Candace McNearny of Denver; 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 14, 2003, at Howe Mortuary in Longmont.
Interment followed at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
