The Steamboat Springs peewee wrestling team walked away from the Dave Schmittel wrestling tournament in Oak Creek last weekend with five first-place medals and a number of other top finishes.
Chase Grippa (85 pounds) and Derek Morris (75 pounds) both finished first in the fourth- through sixth-grade class.
Eddie Brenner took first at 58 pounds in the third- through fourth-grade class, and David Kelly (62 pounds) and Casey Williams (56 pounds) earned top honors in the first- and second-grade class.
The tournament wrapped up the season for the peewee team.
"My kids wrestled hard this year in a very tough and talented district," coach Richard Atkinson said. "They should be very proud of themselves."
Nick Rossman, Brandon Yeager and Cotton Mahanna finished in second place. Teammates Foster Martin and Mitch Walsh grabbed third-place finishes, while Cole Higgins, Peyton Trask and Trent Trask finished in fourth.
It was the seventh tournament of the season for the Steamboat team, which has been working hard since late March.
The Steamboat wrestlers competed in North Park, Meeker, Rifle, New Castle and Soroco this season. They also hosted a meet earlier in the season.
Most of the tournaments drew between 6-10 teams. Fewer teams competed in Soroco, because the event is late in the wrestling season. Several area teams started wrestling in February and had officially ended the season before the meet in Oak Creek took place.
